On NBC10 Boston: Hannah painted her own sneakers with us
Boston is a sneaker city, and The Hub Today came to Water Street looking for the one pair nobody else owns. Hannah sat down at the bench with Nandita and walked out in blue waves and glitter.
What Nandita told the camera
The name says sneakers, and the segment opens on them, but Nandita made the point straight away: the studio paints anything you can wear. T-shirts, totes, aprons, denim jackets, pre-loved or new.
The part that surprised the crew was about her own job. Designers are trained to work for a market. At the studio she works with the person at the bench, on their idea, and she says that has changed how she designs.
“I strive to unlearn here, to learn and to unlearn.”
How Hannah's pair was made
- Prep the shoes. The white pair is prepped so the paint holds.
- Fill in the design sheet. A flat drawing of the shoe and a mood board. Hannah asked for waves, blue and glitter, with neutrals around them.
- Paint in tones. Dark, then medium, then light, and back again, so the waves have depth.
- Glitter. Only where the sheet said it would go.
- Lace up and finish. Charms and beads if you want them, and the pair is ready to wear.

The line that stuck
Near the end, Nandita put the whole idea in two sentences. A painted pair is not only a nice object, it is something you made and can talk about. And the studio rule, which the anchors repeated on air: if you design them, you wear them.
“It's more than just I have a cool shoe. It's I have a cool story.”
